Write on Wednesday … losing

‘I can’t stress how important it is that we behead this fiend.’

Write On Wednesdays

‘I can’t take it anymore, it’s ruining my life.’

A long deep sigh. It was the same argument. Again. The only thing they ever fought about was how to prevent this specter from taking over, invading every thought, inserting itself into every day. Was it going to be there again today? Anyone’s guess. Was the threat of it being there hanging just out of reach? Probably.

‘It can’t ruin your life,’ he said. ‘I wouldn’t let that happen. What sort of man would let that happen?’

She smiled weakly. Tired, she leaned against the sink. Cups and plates were piled up and congealed porridge thickly coated a saucepan. She turned and drew on the too big rubber gloves.

‘I’m going now, I’ve got to leave you, I always hate this moment.’ He kissed the back of her neck. She slumped into his embrace while still facing away from him. Her gloved hands covered in bubbles.

‘Don’t be late,’ she said, ‘I’m going to bookclub tonight.’

This week’s Write on Wednesday is a Masterclass in Fibrotown with the fiendish clever Allison Tait. She set us the line ‘I can’t stress how important it is that we behead this fiend.’ which is the first line from The Untamed Bride, by Stephanie Laurens.
